The Problem

Running a full-time academy alone is harder than it looks.

Most academy owners reach this point the same way. A relationship with a previous instructor broke down. Now you’re carrying everything yourself.

Students are showing up. Belts are being awarded. From the outside, everything looks fine.

But underneath, there’s a quieter problem.

There’s no trusted senior behind you. No one to go to with a technical question that matters. No one who understands both the art and the business. No one validating your rank, your decisions, your direction.

“I just feel adrift.”

Not lost — adrift. The training continues. The academy continues. But the clear path, the backing, the sense of knowing where this is going — that’s gone.

“It’s a privilege to represent the Subconscious Jiu Jitsu association. It’s refreshing to align with a group that is authentic and genuine.”

The Reality

Without real backing, the cracks show.

When it’s time to promote to black belt, the full weight of that decision falls on you. No senior perspective. No second opinion from someone who has done it hundreds of times.

There’s no community behind you either. No peers who understand what you’re carrying. No one who has your back when things get hard — or who calls when they notice something’s off.

The dream was never just a viable business. It was a life built around jiu-jitsu — growing as a teacher, sharpening as a player, surrounded by serious people who hold each other to a high standard.

Building alone makes all of that harder than it needs to be.

Business mentorship calls

Direct access to Nic and Brent for growth questions, curriculum decisions, operational challenges. Not generic coaching. Two coaches who have built academies and understand the business.

Discounted GRADR™ access

GRADR™ is BJJ-specific academy management software — billing, attendance, grading, curriculum tracking, scheduling. Built for academies like yours. Members receive a discount that, for growing academies, offsets much of the affiliation cost.

Curriculum assistance

Every academy is different — different student base, different goals, different teaching style. Nic and Brent work directly with each school owner to design a curriculum that fits their academy, develops their students systematically, and reflects their own approach to the art. Not a template to follow. A framework built around you.

Annual in-person visit

Each year, either Nic or Brent makes the trip to your academy. Two days on your mats — a seminar that elevates your students, and dedicated time with you to work through whatever your academy needs most.

Community events

Two events a year. One in North America, one international. The format is simple: great training, great people, and enough time together to actually connect. These camps are where your jiu-jitsu sharpens and where the relationships that make this association worth belonging to are built.

Global affiliate network

21 affiliated academies across 4 continents — but the network runs deeper than that. Over decades of travel and competition, Nic and Brent have built relationships with clubs and gyms in almost every corner of the world. When you travel, we can connect you with someone to train with. Wherever you're going, there's likely someone there who knows us.

Criteria

Who this is for.

Brown belt or above. Full-time, established academy. Character-driven, not clout-driven.

Not for

  • Academy owners focused primarily on competition results
  • Instructors who evaluate associations by athletic credentials alone
  • Part-time instructors not running a real academy

For

  • Owners who value long-term development over trophies
  • Instructors who want a trusted senior — for technical direction, business guidance, and genuine mentorship
  • Professionals committed to jiu-jitsu as a vocation and a lifestyle

If that’s you, apply.

Affiliation starts with a conversation.

We review every application. If it looks like a fit, we schedule a call directly with Nic or Brent. Both sides decide. If it’s right, you’re in.

No hard sell. No time pressure.
